More Than Just a Kitchen
More Than Just a Kitchen
For more than 700 students at Mamakari Secondary School, daily meals were prepared in a traditional mud-brick kitchen using wood-fired stoves.

But their kitchen, where that vital meal was prepared, was falling apart. The walls were crumbling, cooking over open fires had become unsafe, and every day, hundreds of children were exposed to risk.
The need was clear: reliable meals require reliable facilities.
Kitchen staff worked in smoky conditions, while rusting equipment and limited access to safely boiled drinking water created ongoing health concerns. As the school community continued to grow, the existing facilities were no longer able to meet its needs.
The need was clear: safe meals require safe, sustainable facilities.
“Before having this modern kitchen, we faced challenges. We often received food late, and sometimes became ill because our drinking water was not properly boiled.”
— Student, Mamakari Secondary School

A Kitchen For Generations
A Kitchen For Generations
Peak Humanity partnered with the local community to replace ageing cooking facilities with a modern kitchen designed to improve health, safety, and long-term sustainability.
The project introduced an improved stove with smoke extraction, safer cooking facilities, and an integrated water-heating system capable of providing reliably boiled drinking water. Local labour was used throughout construction, creating 40 jobs and ensuring the community played an active role in the project's delivery.
While the school currently serves around 754 students, the new facilities were designed with future growth in mind and can support up to 1,800 children.

What We Made Possible
What began as a traditional mud-brick kitchen has become a safer, healthier, and more efficient environment for preparing daily meals.
The introduction of a modern stove and smoke-extraction system has improved working conditions for cooking staff, reducing exposure to smoke and creating a more sustainable cooking process.
The project has also improved access to safely boiled drinking water through an integrated water-heating system, helping support the health and wellbeing of students throughout the school day.
By addressing immediate health and safety concerns while planning for future growth, the new kitchen provides a long-term foundation that will benefit the school community for years to come.
For the staff who use the facilities every day, the benefits were immediate. Improved cooking equipment and better working conditions have transformed the way meals are prepared for students.
