Kidarafa Primary School

Kitchen and Classrooms Renovation

We built a new, safe, and sustainable kitchen for over 1,200 children at Kidarafa Primary School in Tanzania.

As a boarding school, most students spend their days and nights on campus, making access to reliable meals essential for their health and learning.

Alongside the kitchen, we also completely renovated the classrooms by upgrading floors, walls, blackboards, and windows to create a brighter, safer space for both students and teachers.

We built a new, safe, and sustainable kitchen for over 1,200 children at Kidarafa Primary School in Tanzania. As a boarding school, most students spend their days and nights on campus, making access to reliable meals essential for their health and learning. Before this project, Kidarafa didn’t have a kitchen at all (!)

The teacher cooked outside the classroom, directly on the ground, exposed to weather, smoke, and dust. It was unsafe, unhygienic, and far from what the children deserved. On top of that, students were asked to bring firewood from home, which was costly for parents and unsuitable for young children.

For many, the school meal was the most dependable one of their day, making the need for a proper kitchen urgent and undeniable. After the success of our first project in Ng’wandakw, we partnered again with John Bei and the local community to bring Kidarafa’s vision to life.

The plan was not only to build a brand new kitchen but also to completely restore the school, installing new windows, refurbishing walls and ceilings, and adding new blackboards. More than 40 local workers were employed during construction, supporting families and ensuring the project stayed rooted in the community.

The new kitchen was designed to be safe, efficient, and sustainable, with improved airflow and reduced firewood use, making it kinder to both people and the environment. Today, it serves over 1,200 students every day in a clean and secure space.

Teachers can cook comfortably, and children can enjoy warm meals without worrying about safety or smoke. The restoration work brought new life to the school — brighter classrooms, safer structures, and renewed motivation among both students and teachers.

Kidarafa reminded us that lasting change often starts with simple things: a safe place to cook, a classroom with light and air, a meal shared with care. This project wouldn’t have been possible without John Bei, the dedicated local builders, teachers, and every donor who supported us. Together, we transformed a school without a kitchen into a place of safety and nourishment.
